On Thursday, April 12, I had the privilege of attending the Manitoba Teachers’ Society Young Humanitarian Awards Celebration. MTS honoured Manitoba public school students whose acts of compassion, self-sacrifice, leadership, creativity and caring inspired and encouraged others to do the same. There were three individual student awards – Alliana Rempel from Arborg, Mackenzie Clark from Brandon, and Hayley Jenkins from Thompson – and one group award (KUAMINI). Each recipient received a $1,000 prize, a Young Humanitarian Medallion with Ribbon, and an individualized framed plaque for their efforts.

The event was held at The Manitoba Theatre for Young People, and the night was well attended with just under 300 guests and audience members. Tyler Magz from Virgin Radio 103.0 did a great job as the Master of Ceremonies and musical performances by Tec-Voc Project 150, singer/songwriter Faouzia, and River East Transcona’s very own River East Collegiate Percussion Ensemble rounded out the evening.

It was an inspiring night that touched the hearts of everyone present. The well-deserving recipients spoke with grace and poise and gave the audience messages of hope for the future. I feel honoured to have served as a committee member for the YHA this year and look forward to hearing about the future endeavours of these passionate students.
