PPDF Guidelines for 2025-2026: Prioritization of Canadian-based PD (Semester 1)

An annual review of the PPDF guidelines has taken place over the past few months, and the joint committee has now approved and posted the revised guidelines. The most significant change is the addition of an appendix outlining the prioritization of Canadian-based professional development in the application approval process.

After extensive discussion – within the committee, at the Executive table, and with the employer – it was decided that, in light of tariffs levied against Canadian imports, priority will be given to applications for PD taking place in Canada over those based in the United States. While we wanted to express solidarity with those in our community whose livelihoods have been negatively affected by these tariffs, we felt it was not practical to ban all U.S.-based PD. Given the larger population and broader range of offerings in the U.S., there are times when relevant, high-quality PD is only available outside of Canada.

We believe this approach strikes a fair balance between supporting Canadian opportunities and recognizing the diverse professional learning needs of our members. The appendix on Canadian-based PD prioritization will apply to semester 1 PD, and the committee will revisit the issue in September to determine whether it should continue for semester 2.

Applications for PD taking place July 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026 open online at 6:30 AM on Monday, June 2. Please see our PPDF page to view the guidelines, the appendix related to the prioritization of Canadian-based PD, and to preview the questions on the application, and to apply once applications open.
